Cariology and Operative Dentistry - Cariology is the study of dental caries, a disease that affects many individuals world wide. Cariology includes the aetiology, epidemiology, pathology, microbiology and prevention of this common disease. In addition, it involves the study of the related dental problem of toothwear, particularly that caused by acid erosion. It is closely associated with the subject of Removable Prosthodontics. The two subjects are now being merged into a single speciality and our teaching programme is being developed to reflect this association.

It involves the biology of the normal deep tissues including cementum on the tooth surface, the periodontal fibres which attach this to the surrounding bone, and normal visible superficial soft tissues which surround the teeth. The specialty includes the study of the aetiology, epidemiology and diagnosis of periodontal disease and the practice of prevention and treatment.
